Checking Back with the Town of Cary

Home to world-class business and national retail stores, we check back in with the Town of Cary, located in the heart of the Triangle area of North Carolina. Three years ago, Cailen Waddell (Program Supervisor of Technical Operations for the Town of Cary) and Andrew Fisher (Bandit Lites) reached out to the team at Canto USA to find a lighting solution for the Town Council Chambers. They were looking for an LED retrofit solution that would provide superior performance to the existing luminaires, with wide optics, high output and smooth dimming on camera. Furthermore, as the town had identified lamp replacements in the Council Chambers as high-risk due to maintenance staff having to change lamps over steep sloped seating risers, they needed something with simple installation and easy maintenance.

The Town of Cary procured 20 RETRO-Classic’s at a tungsten-perfect 2700 Kelvin CCT to replace their existing Halogen lamps. The installation was a simple process that was completed in-house in half a day. The fixtures were installed directly into the existing mini-candelabra sockets and worked seamlessly with their current dimming system. “Everything has been working great [since the replacement]!” said Cailen Waddell. “The factory was great about working with us to make sure we got the right lenses for the fixtures, so we haven’t had to make any changes since. Our biggest issue [when finding the replacement] was one of maintenance and man hours accessing house lights over steeply raked seats and the aesthetic concerns of fixtures being out. The RETRO-Classic addressed all those concerns.”

At Canto USA we strive to provide our customers with satisfaction in both product performance and customer service. There is no doubt that the Town of Cary was satisfied with both. “We will likely continue to look at Canto Followspot options as we build additional facilities” said Cailen.

Transforming the Woodruff Arts Center With the RETRO Series

The Woodruff Arts Center is a visual and performing arts center located in Atlanta, Georgia with a mission to pass the power of art on to the next generation through access and education. Opened in 1968, it is home to three renowned artistic institutions: The Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and High Museum of Art.

The Arts Center had previously upgraded their Atrium/Lobby fixtures from PAR 56’s, but they were non-dimmable without 0-10V. Thus, they were looking to change these out as they wanted line dimmable fixtures. Barbizon Lighting Company recommended Canto USA and the RETRO series for the job based on previous experience with the product line.

A previous lamp install in the Arts Center had damaged the gimbles on the original adjustable PAR 56 fixtures. As such, we had to make some adaptor rings for standoff height, as well as rotation to allow for the RETRO to be used in the existing fixtures along with custom trim covers. The original fixture cans and wiring also needed to be updated before the installation. After a small learning curve for the installation process, an electrical contractor was able to complete the installation of 125 RETRO-Classic 500’s in about a week. The upgrade was a success with everyone at the Woodruff Arts Center amazed at the difference the lighting made in the space.

“Everyone is very pleased. The space really pops and it is much brighter and elegant. It really highlights the renovations done throughout the Memorial Hall Space,” said Josh Fisher, Systems Integrator, Barbizon Lighting Company.

Owen Valley High School Simplified Two Systems into One with Canto USA’s RETRO Series

Owen Valley High School in Spencer, Indiana was looking to upgrade their auditorium’s existing lighting. The school had 20 300W mini candelabra standard pendant cans for performance dimming as well as 20 secondary mercury or sodium vapor fixtures for day-to-day activities. They wanted an option to do dimmable LED house lights for their performances.

They reached out to Aaron Seelig of Indianapolis Stage Sales and Rental, Inc. Aaron recommended the school go with 20 of Canto USA’s RETRO-Classic 700 and they would be able to replace both systems with one fixture type. The RETRO series customization and adapters also allow for the installer to replace the lamp without having to modify or replace the entire fixture and dimmer system.

Since no rewiring work was needed and the installation was as simple as replacing a lamp, the installation went quite smoothly. There was some minor work on the fixtures to remove the existing reflector and glass, install the RETRO-Classic 700, replace the reflector only, and attach the safety cable to the body of the fixture. Vapor fixtures were just abandoned in place. The auditorium was replaced in one evening so they could have classes meeting in the space the next morning due to COVID requirements.

The auditorium director was amazed that only 20 fixtures were able to replace the two existing systems.  They can now use one system for both dimmable house lights and daytime instructional periods. This also simplified their control system as opposed to having two different ways of turning on these fixtures.

“I am a huge fan of the Canto RETRO line!” said Aaron, “I have been able to use it on any dimming system I have come across, from ETC to Strand to Colortran and more. These have been a lifesaver for projects that don’t have the funds to hire an outside electrician to pull new LoVo wire to each fixture. At first my customers may seem hesitant to look at this theatrical screw-in retrofit due to the price. However, when I bring an electrical contractor’s quote to replace all the fixtures with new cans or pull new LoVo wire to each fixture they quickly see how this design and the phenomenal dimming curve it has will save them on costs and deliver superb quality.”
