Canto USA Donates Lighting Equipment to UNCSA
When live events and in-person training were limited during the pandemic, Canto USA found a way to help theatre students at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) gain more hands-on experience with professional lighting equipment.
Shawn Harmon, Eastern Sales Manager for Canto USA, learned through UNCSA alumnus Josh Selander, Assistant Professor of Lighting Technology, that the school accepted equipment donations for student training. Canto USA had surplus equipment available, making it a good opportunity to clear warehouse space while putting the gear to practical use.
A Truckload of Lighting Equipment
UNCSA coordinated with Special Event Transportation of Winston-Salem to provide a 52-foot semi-trailer for the pickup.
Canto USA staff loaded the trailer with surplus followspots, lighting fixtures, ballasts, hardware, road cases, and rigging equipment.
“We were overwhelmed by how much there was,” said Josh Selander. “The sheer size of the donation was staggering.”
Giving Students Hands-On Experience
When the equipment arrived at UNCSA, students and staff unloaded it and began putting it to use.
The donated gear supported maintenance, installation, and setup training with equipment students might not otherwise have access to in a school environment. Training included areas such as PPE and safe xenon lamp installation.
Some of the equipment was also used for outdoor events, while other pieces supported theatrical productions adapted for video production.
“We’ve worked more this semester with less than we ever have. We’re so thankful for Canto USA’s donation of the equipment. It’s done wonders for the school and students,” said Josh.
Supporting the Lighting Community
“This was an excellent opportunity to help the community,” said John Luhrs of Canto USA. “Considering how this year has challenged everybody in the lighting industry, we’re glad the students could put all of it to good use to further their education.”
