In 2005, Starpoint Central School District purchased two Canto 700 MSR Mark I followspots for use at its high school. After more than 18 years of musicals, plays, and other productions, the district chose a followspot refurbishment rather than replacement to return both units to service.
We spoke with Alanna Steffen of Starpoint Central School District about the refurbishment, the troubleshooting process, and her experience working directly with Canto USA.
Why the Followspots Needed Refurbishment
Before the October 2023 refurbishment, the two followspots had developed different problems.
One unit was missing several components after an outside company had previously attempted a repair shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. When the district later tried to recover the fixture, the repair company no longer had components like the power supply and lamp housing.
The second followspot remained operational until its power supply failed shortly before a spring production.
“Thankfully we could rent from a local supplier at the last minute,” Alanna said.
Rather than replace two followspots that had already served the school for nearly two decades, Starpoint contacted Canto USA to see whether the existing equipment could be restored.

Refurbishing the Existing Canto 700 MSR Followspots
The first followspot required extensive work because of its missing components. We replaced its reflector, lamp housing, and power supply as part of the refurbishment.
The second fixture required less work, with only its failed power supply needing replacement.
Once both units were returned to the school, however, another problem became apparent. One followspot operated normally, while the other was noticeably dimmer even after its lamp had been running for more than 10 minutes.
That started another round of troubleshooting with Canto USA.
Troubleshooting Directly With Canto USA
Alanna worked directly with John Luhrs at Canto USA to determine what was causing the difference in output.
“The response from Canto USA was prompt and knowledgeable,” she said. “John Luhrs at Canto USA worked with me directly to figure out the issue and help me troubleshoot over the phone.”
She also appreciated being able to communicate directly with someone familiar with the equipment rather than working through an automated support system.
“I could call directly and leave a voicemail and get an answer back that day. It was great.”
Because the followspots were older models, troubleshooting took some time. Canto USA sent components for the school to install and test while working through the problem step by step.
Troubleshooting summary
- Installed replacement power supplies and lamp housing where needed.
- Tested output and run-time behavior to isolate the dim fixture.
- Replaced and tested the ignitor when tests indicated it was the source of the low output.
- Sourced parts from inventory and demo equipment to avoid unnecessary replacement.
The issue was eventually traced to the ignitor, a less common failure than the power-supply problems the school had already encountered.
Finding replacement components for equipment in service for more than 18 years also required extra work. Alanna said John located parts from available inventory and demo equipment so the district could complete the repair rather than replace the entire followspot.
“Every time I would receive a new item to troubleshoot, I was able to install it and test it with the help of Canto USA, and mostly John,” she said. “We got everything put together. They currently both work perfectly!”
Repairing Instead of Replacing
For Starpoint, one of the biggest benefits of the experience was that the first recommendation was not simply to purchase new equipment.
The district had two followspots that had already been used for nearly two decades. Even though the units were older and replacement components were becoming harder to find, Canto USA kept working with the school to get them operational again.
Alanna explained:
“I appreciate the dedication to helping us solve our issue. Instead of trying to upsell our district on a new followspot, Canto USA helped us fix our current ones, even though they are a bit outdated, and we were able to get them working for our High School.”
She also pointed to the fixtures’ age as an indication of how well they had held up.
“Having them last this long before having an issue shows the quality of the product.”
The experience also reinforced the value of having access to technical support for equipment that schools and theaters may keep in service for many years.
“Through every part of the troubleshooting process, I could contact a representative directly and work through the issue. That is refreshing.”
