Cross City Church in Texas completed a house light retrofit in its main worship center using Canto USA’s RETRO Series, achieving dramatically brighter, more even lighting, a major reduction in connected load (from 78,000 watts to 11,232 watts), and an installation that took just under five days with one boom lift.
Below is a concise summary followed by the project details, design choices, installation notes, and outcomes.
TL;DR — Project Highlights
- Product: Canto USA RETRO Series LED retrofit (RETRO-Fusion® 2.0 / RETRO-Passive® 2.0)
- Color temperature selected: 4000K
- Installation time: just under five days (house lights operational first weekend)
- Connected load before: 78,000 watts; after: 11,232 watts
- Most existing housings, wiring, and ETC dimming system reused
Why Cross City Church Upgraded Its Houselights
The worship center opened in 1999 and, after multiple campus renovations elsewhere, the main room began to look and feel dated. Members had reported uneven lighting and insufficient light levels for reading during services, and the church wanted a modern, dimmable white house light rather than a color-changing solution.
We spoke with Brad Powers, Media Director for Cross City Church, about the decision to choose the RETRO Series, how the installation proceeded, and the effects after upgrading the houselights.
Why the RETRO Series Made Sense
Cross City Church evaluated multiple options, including RGB house-light solutions, but prioritized a smooth, dimmable white light. The RETRO Series stood out because it allowed reuse of much of the existing system. That approach minimized tear-out and helped control installation costs.
The retrofit retained:
- Existing housings and fixture locations
- Existing wiring
- Most of the ETC dimming system
Canto USA’s RETRO products are designed as direct replacements, compatible with older and newer dimming control electronics—allowing projects to modernize light output without rebuilding the entire system.
Finding the Right Color Temperature and Optics
To evaluate real-world performance, Canto USA supplied custom demo units for side-by-side trials in the worship center. After testing, Cross City Church selected 4000K for its balance of perceived brightness and color neutrality.
Gemini, a Dallas-based live events company, and Horton Controls supported the project, and a small parts issue (PAR64 adapters were supplied instead of PAR56 adapters) was corrected with overnight replacement parts so the schedule stayed on track.
Customizing the Existing Fixtures
Cross City Church provided a spare house light fixture for evaluation so Canto USA could confirm fit and performance. Canto designed a custom part to fit the existing fixture and support the new LED retrofit, keeping physical modifications to a minimum.
The ETC Sensor Rack electronics were later updated to improve dimming curves and give the church tighter control over the dimming behavior.
Installation and Timeline
Once equipment arrived, the houselight installation took just under five days using one boom lift. The houselights were operational on the older control setup for the first weekend, with additional dimmer work completed the following week.

The visual difference was immediate. Brad said,
Our worship center has been completely transformed. It’s way brighter than before and has become a much more welcoming place to enter to worship and learn.
Because the new system produces more usable light, the church typically operates house lights around 45% at the brightest point in the service.

Dimming Performance and Reliability
After tuning the dimming curves, the RETRO units performed well. The church observed occasional brightness fluctuations between roughly 30% and 50%—Brad noted incoming building voltage could be contributing. Aside from that, fixtures have been reliable.
The RETRO-Fusion® 2.0 line is designed for 0–100% forward- and reverse-phase dimming and compatibility with older SCR, TRIAC, and IGBT dimming systems as well as newer dimmers.
Energy and Utility Incentives
The connected lighting load dropped from approximately 78,000 watts before the upgrade to 11,232 watts after the retrofit. Cross City Church applied for and received a utility rebate tied to the lighting upgrade.
Why This Approach Can Be Simpler
For Cross City Church, the RETRO approach allowed modernization without tearing out housings, controls, or wiring. Much of the original infrastructure stayed in place while delivering a room that better matched the renovated campus.
Canto USA has been a great vendor for us—always available to give answers and resources to help us find the right solution for our space. We’ve been extremely happy with our experience on this project—with Canto USA, Gemini, and Horton Controls. I wish we would’ve considered this for our smaller worship space as well. It’s the perfect solution for us.
Brad, vielen Dank, dass Sie mit uns über Ihre Erfahrungen mit unserem Produkt gesprochen haben.
Canto USA’s RETRO Series Fully Dimmable LED Retrofit Houselights
Canto USA is proud to present our RETRO series. The RETRO-Fusion® 2.0 and RETRO-Passive® 2.0 are 0–100% phase dimmable (forward and reverse) variable wattage LED 2700K–6500K 80–97 CRI engines. They are designed for older SCR, TRIAC, and IGBT dimmer systems but are compatible with newer dimmer systems. A direct replacement of existing lamps, our LED retrofit can be used in a wide range of applications or even new installations. Custom and standard mounting options are available.
